Kids' Smoothies

A kale-and-frozen-fruit base, built to taste like dessert while sneaking in real nutrition. Greek yogurt mutes the kale, banana carries the sweetness, and nut butter or flax rides along without anyone noticing. Blend to your kids' taste — more fruit, less kale, until you know how adventurous they're feeling.

The Base: Kale & Frozen Fruit Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup kale, stems removed
  • 1.5–2 cups frozen fruit (Costco mixed berry or tropical blend)
  • 1 banana, fresh or frozen
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed or chia seeds
  • 1 cup milk or unsweetened almond milk

Method

  1. Add liquid and kale to the blender first — helps it break down smoothly.
  2. Add yogurt, banana, flaxseed, and frozen fruit on top.
  3. Blend until fully smooth, 45–60 seconds. Add more milk if it's too thick to pour.
Start with a small handful of kale — about 1 cup per full batch — until you know how picky they are. The frozen-fruit-to-kale ratio matters more than anything else for whether they'll actually drink it.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Kale Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup kale, stems removed
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp peanut or almond butter
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup milk
  • Optional: 1 tsp honey if the cocoa reads too bitter

Method

  1. Blend liquid, kale, and cocoa first until smooth.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and blend again until creamy.
The cocoa does a lot of the work hiding the kale flavor — usually the easiest sell for a skeptical kid. Good rotation option so the same berry smoothie doesn't get boring.

Mango-Berry Kale Smoothie with a Splash of OJ

Ingredients

  • 1 cup kale, stems removed
  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • ½ cup frozen mixed berries
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • ½ cup water or milk to thin

Method

  1. Blend all ingredients until smooth, adding more liquid as needed to reach a drinkable consistency.
The orange juice brightens the whole thing and covers any lingering kale taste better than milk alone does — worth trying first if a kid rejects the base recipe.

Make-ahead tip

Portion kale, fruit, and flax into freezer bags or containers ahead of time — add yogurt and milk fresh at blend time. Cuts afternoon prep down to under a minute and keeps the kale from going limp in the fridge before you get to it.
